Paper Meeting on "The Use of Bamboo as Biosteel to Construct Eco-friendly Structures at Low Cost"

Assam State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India), has organized a Popular Talk on "The Use of Bamboo as Biosteel to Construct Eco-friendly Structures at Low Cost" on 6th January 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Golden Jubilee Lecture Hall at its premises. Er. Pulak Sarmah, Hony Secretary of Assam State Centre initiate the event by welcoming all members and introducing the Appointed Speaker, Er Manoj Kr Das, Executive Engineer, Umrangso NEC Division (PWRD), Dima Hasao and a popular Technology Enthusiastic and Inventor.

In his deliberations, Er. Manoj Kr Das spoke in detail about the processing technique of Bamboo and its use for Concreting over Bamboo Splits (COBS) and Bamboo Reinforced Cement Concreting (BRCC) to build low cost modern houses and other structures which are as strong and durable as the conventional RCC structures. Er. Manoj Kr. Das, with his vast experience in working with locally available and cheap construction materials, like Bamboo, beautifully presented a number of case studies in front of the audience. As per Er. Das, if these COBS and BRCC technologies are followed with proper specification, it would result considerable reduction of steelwork, saving huge resources and the structure would also be lighter by weight. It is also worth mentioning that, both the COBS and BRCC technologies as invented by Er. Das has received Patent granted by Govt. of India. Members actively participated in the substituted discussion after the presentation of the Interesting topic.

Prof (Dr) N N Patwari, Chairman of the Assam State Centre summed up the discussion with closing remarks that, Bamboo may be used as Bio Steel for sustainable growth, promote eco-friendly environment and resource efficient construction with overall cost savings.

Paper Meeting on "The Evolution of Telecommunication and 5G Technology"

Assam State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India), had organized a Popular Talk on the topic "The Evolution of Telecommunication and 5G Technology" on 19th February 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre at its premises. Er. Pulak Sarmah, Hony. Secretary of Assam State Centre initiate the event by welcoming all members and introducing the Appointed Speaker, Er Avinna Kumar Pahi, Chief General Manager, BSNL, Assam Circle and a distinguished Technocrat.

In his deliberations, Er.A K Pahi spoke in detail about the Evolution of Tele-Communication and 5G Technology. Er. A K Pahi spoke detailed about the evolution of wireless technology from 1G to 5G. Er. Pahi in his speech empharized that telecommunication and networking has been and will be one of the core technologies in helping the evolution of mankind and technology itself. The G in 4G or 5G stands for generation and the number is just a representation of the evolution of technology. The advancement in the field of wireless network technology is crucial to put us in an era that is driven by technology all around us.

National Science Day 2022

National Science Day,2022 was observed by the Institution of Engineers (India), Assam State Centre (IEI-ASC) at Bura Mayang Janajatiya High School, Raja Mayang in Morigaon District about 35 Km from Guwahati with predominantly ST students. Teachers along with the Students of the School and good number of Committee members of the State Centre as well as some Corporate Members were also present in the event. Mr. Dhireswar Saikia, Principal of the School delivered the welcome address. Mr. Pulak Sarmah, Hony. Secretary of the Centre introduced all the members of IEI-ASC present on the occasion to the audience. He also introduced the Appointed Speaker, Mr. Jayanta Kumar Sarma, a Popular Science-Motivator, Environment Activist, Member of National Children's Science Congress, NCSTC-DST-GoI and Consultant of Natural Resources Management, etc.

School Authority also felicitated the Appointed Speaker and all the participating Corporate Members.

Mr. Jayanta Kumar Sarma spoke in details on the theme "Integrated approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future". In his speech he emphasized on the need of scientific temper and approach among the public in general and students in particular for sustainable future. He appealed for inculcating scientific mindset amongst the students. He also elaborated to the students and teachers the steps in participating at NCSC.

Prof. (Dr.) S K Kakoty, Immediate Past-Chairman of the Centre elaborated the need and importance of celebration of National Science Day. He also elaborated the steps of the IEI-ASC supporting the repairing and improvement of an annexe building of the School, for which it became one of the 10 Schools in the District upgraded to Higher Secondary status this year, to accommodate increasing students.

Er. B. Kalita, Past-Hony-Secretary and in-charge of the construction activities at site of Burha Mayang expressed his satisfaction over completion of the work and cooperation received from School Authority.

World Engineering Day 2022

Assam State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) in association with the Northeast Startup Festival 2022had organized a Workshop on the Focal Theme "Build Back Wiser-Engineering the Future" on the occasion of World Engineering Day on 4th March 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre Hall at its premises. Er. Pulak Sarmah, Hony Secretary of Assam State Centre initiate the event by welcoming all the Corporate members, Engineers, participating young Entrepreneurs, Startup ventures and introducing the Appointed Speaker, Dr. Amarjyoti Kashyap, President, ENVIRON, a leading NGO of Northeast and a national award winner Environmentalist, popular Science Communicator and Inventor.

World Engineering Day (WED) for Sustainable Development is celebrated on the 4th of March every year as a UNESCO international day promoting the profile of engineers and engineering. WED is an opportunity to engage with Governments, Organizations, Universities, Industries, Media and the Community to address the need for engineers around the world to develop strategic frameworks and best practices for the implementation of engineering solutions for Sustainable Development.

In 2022, The World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) and its members and partners are hosting the HACKATHON which is an international event with a goal to involve engineering students from all over the globe in the celebration of the World Engineering Day.

In his deliberations, Dr. Amarjyoti Kashyap spoke in detail about the successful Solid Waste Management in urban area as well as rural area with some simplified ways and technology developed by him for the successful Solid Waste Management Practice, like- "Waste Assimilator" for the management of biodegradable solid waste at source; "Household Plastic Craft" to utilize plastic waste at source, "Money Earning Litterbin" for the source segregation of plastic waste and "SeujBahan" for door to door collection of segregated plastic waste etc.

Er. Pankaj Gogoi, Project Director, Northeast Startup Festival 2022 shared the Mission and Vision of Northeast Startup Festival and outlined the development of Startup Ecosystem.

Dr. Samir Baruah, Mentor of Startup Assam also shared about Startup ecosystem and how BRAIN (Brahmaputra Region Angel Investor Network) will support the ecosystem.

4(Four) nos. Startup Groups were presented their ventures and shared their ideas with the audience as a part of Hackathon.

World Water Day 2022

World Water Day 2022 was celebrated with a daylong programme in the Institution of Engineers (India), Assam State Centre on 22nd March 2022. The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. (Dr) N N Patwari, Chairman of the Centre and Er. Pulak Sarmah, Honorary Secretary, presented the welcome address.Dr. Pradip Kr Baishya spoke in detail about the theme, “Ground Water: Making the Invisible Visible”. Er. Biswadeep Das, Secretary, Public Health Engineering Deptt., Govt. of Assam and Dr. Pradip Kumar Bora, Director, NERIWALM graced the occasion as Guest of Honour(s). Sjt. Ashok Singhal, Hon'ble Minister, Irrigation was invited as Chief Guest, but he could not turned up in the function due to some urgent appointment for ongoing Assembly Budget Session and He had sent an inspirational message to the Organizing Committee wishing the success of the event. Prof (Dr) Rajib Bhattacharjya of IIT, Guwahati was the Keynote Speaker.

Prof(Dr) Rajib Kr Bhattacharjya, in his Keynote Speech on the theme "Ground Water : Making the Invisible Visible" highlighted that the overexploitation of Ground water, together with irregular rain, Climate change, Urbanization, etc. is driving the water-related crises we see around the world. He emphasized on effective Ground water management, like, Ground water Regulation, watershed development, finding alternative water sources, rain water harvesting, etc.

Dr. Pradip Kr Bora, in his speech as Guest of Honour stressed in checking and restoring the quality of Ground water. He also emphasized on the importance of Spring watershed management.

Another Guest of Honour, Er. Biswdeep Das, in his speech emphasized on nature-based solutions have the potential to solve many of our water challenges, including judicious use of Ground water.

Two prestigious awards were presented in the function. Shri Abhijit Ghosh, the Best Engineering Graduate of Assam Science & Technology University of 2021 was awarded Satyendra Sarma Memorial Award, while Shri Himangshu Barman, Best Electrical Engineering Graduate of Assam Science & Technology University of 2021 was awarded Gokul Chandra Goswami award by the Guest of Honour Er. Biswajit Das and Dr. Pradip Kr Bora respectively.

A Souvenir cum Technical Volume and Quarterly News Letter of World Water Day issue were released on the occasion by Guest of Honour Dr. Pradip Kr Bora and Er. Biswajit Das respectively.

The inaugural session was followed by a Technical Session, which was Chaired by Prof (Dr) Mohammad Jawed of IIT, Guwahati. Er. Shantanu Choudhury was the rapporteur. Three interesting and valued Technical papers were presented in the session by Miss Murchana Choudhury, Dr. Partha Jyoti Das and Miss Milan Priya Bora& her team.

After the Lunch, a Committee sited for Panel discussion under the Chairman and formulated some recommendation to be submitted to the Government for Policy formulation.

Report on All Assam Inter-Institution Science & Technology Quiz 2022

The Institution of Engineers (India), Assam State Centre in association with AEC Class '88 Foundation, an Alumni Group of Assam Engineering College organized an All Assam Inter-Institution Science & Technology Quiz on 10th April 2022. The event was sponsored by Oil India Ltd, Duliajan. The inaugural session was presided over by Prof (Dr) N N Patwari FIE, Chairman of the Centre and Er. Pulak Sarmah, Honorary Secretary, presented the welcome address and also felicitated Er. Pankaj Kr Goswami, Director (Operation), OIL, invited as Guest of Honour. Er. Goswami formally inaugurate the opening of the Quiz. Er. Kula Kamal Roy from the Foundation spoke in detail about the QUIZ. Er. Tridip Bora, a vetern Quiz Master from Guwahati was invited to conduct the Quiz.

Total 38 Nos of team from different Institutions across the State were participated in the Quiz and 6(Six) among them qualified to the final round.

World Telecommunication & Information Society Day 2022

Assam State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) celebrated World Telecom and Information Society Day on 17th May 2022 in its premises at Panbazar Guwahati with theme: "Digital Technologies for Older Persons and Healthy Ageing". For the inaugural session, Er. A K Pahi, CGMT, Assam Circle, BSNL was the Chief Guest while Smt A Siddiqui, GM, BSNL and Er. B C Nayak, CTO, Reliance Jio were guests of honour. Key Note speaker was Er. R Dutta choudhury, Retd. CTO, Reliance Jio. Prof (Dr.) N N Patwari FIE, Chairman ASC-IEI presided over the inaugural session.

Er. Dutta choudhury emphasized on the importance of various digital devices for older persons and healthy ageing. He specially mentioned about need of digital devices like glucometer, digital BP machines, oximeter etc. Smt A Siddiqui mentioned about difficulties of older persons in handling digital machines while Er. Nayak stressed on the need of Internet and Data services. Chief Guest Er. A K Pahi elaborated on technological changes and also on the importance of digital technologies to older persons. He highlighted on connectivity status and e-education for younger generation. A Technical Volume cum Souvenir was released on this occasion.

The technical session was presided over by Shri D Goswami, Retd. Sr. DDG, NIC with Er. Shantanu Choudhury MIE as rapporteur. Five Technical papers were presented by students of local engineering colleges and universities.

More than 200 persons attended the function. Past Chairmen, Past Hony. Secretaries, Corporate Members, Academicians, Professionals, students and others attended the celebration. It was covered by print and electronic media. Er. Pulak Sarmah MIE, Hony. Secy gave welcome address and Er. Amitava Nath FIE, Org. Secy. offered vote of thanks. The function was completed with grand success.

World Environment Day 2022

The World Environment Day 2022 was celebrated by the Institution of Engineers (India), Assam State Centre in association with AARANYAK with 2 outdoor program and one Popular Talk program at it's premises on the focal theme of this year "Only One Earth" on 5th June 2022.

In the morning session 2 nos. outdoor program was organized, one at Gamariguri Chanaka Primary School, Chanaka, Raja Mayang, Morigaon (Assam) and another at Pantan High School, Jalukbari, Chaigaon, Kamrup (Assam). In the program at Chanaka, some 40 KM East from Guwahati all the Teachers and Students of the nearby Schools were participated. Many Committee members of IEI namely, Er. Bhaben Kalita, Er. Mahesh Barkataki, Er. Monojit Mishra, Dr. Nripen Das and Activists from AARANYAK, namely Manash Bhattacharyya, were also present to interact with the participants and make them aware about the significance of WED. Plantation of tree sapling and Drawing Competition among the students were arranged on the occasion.

In the other program at the Pantan High School another 2 nos. Associates for this celebration, namely Chaigaon Anchalik Rabha Chatra Sangtha and AEC Class '88 Foundation were collaborated with IEI-ASC. Beside plantation of tree sapling a Technical deliberation was presented by Dr. Pradip Kr Baishya MIE on Solid Waste Management and Pollution Control which can save our only Earth. Sri Ajit Rabha, President Kamrup Jila Rabha Chatra Sangtha, Sri Ratna Kt Dewriary from AEC Class'88 Foundation and the Head Master of Pantan High School also spoked on the occasion. Apart from Chairman and Hony. Secretary, Er. G N Khound FIE, Er. Pradip Adhikari FIE, Dr. S K Kakoty FIE also attended the event. A large numbers of student and Teachers and members of Chaigaon Anchalik Rabha Chatra Sangtha were also participated. From AEC Class '88 Foundation Er. Kula Kamal Roy, Er. Dipak Sarma, Er. Bijit Goswami and Er. Sushanta Deka were also participated.

In the evening program which was arranged at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Hall with large numbers of Corporate members was addressed by two Appointed Speakers, Sjt Jatindra Sarma IFS, Director of Kaziranga National Park and Dr. Bibhab Kr Talukdar, CEO & SG of AARANYAK. Sri Sarma gave a detail account of conservation efforts about KNP and medicinal plants of Assam. He also screened a beautiful VDO Clip about KNP. Dr. Arup Kr Misra, Chairman, Pollution Control Board also spoked on the occasion. The program was chaired by Prof. (Dr.) N N Patwari FIE and Er. Pulak Sarma welcomed the Appointed Speakers and the audience. Er. Mahesh Barkataki felicitated the both speakers and Dr. P K Baishya MIE offered the formal vote of thanks. The program witnessed a very vibrant and lively interaction among the speakers and the audience.
